About Laura Smith
Laura Smith offers legal advice and representation for a wide range of family law disputes at Giffen Lawyers LLP in Kitchener, Ontario. Laura is committed to her clients, with her focus on long-term solutions to benefit a family beyond litigation. Laura is a strong advocate in the realms of mediation, negotiating settlements or preparing for litigation. She has the resources of a full-service law firm to assist with all areas of a client's file. Together, her and her law clerks work towards achieving solutions tailored to each specific client and their family's circumstances.
Laura was born and raised in Waterloo, Ontario. She graduated from Queen's University with a Bachelor of Arts in Honours Religious Studies with a minor in History in 2014. In 2017, She obtained her law degree from the University of Windsor and her U.S. law degree from the Detroit Mercy Law. During her time at Queen's, Laura was an active member raising money for CLEW: Cambodian Legal Education for Women, which sent impoverished Cambodian women to law school, as well as Not For Sale Queen's an organization raising awareness of modern day human slavery. Throughout all three years of law school, Laura volunteered at Community Legal Aid assisting clients with limited means, specializing in the family law department her final year. Laura also assisted family law lawyers giving complimentary legal advice at the House of Sophrosyne in Windsor and the Windsor Youth Centre.
Laura began articling with Giffen Lawyers in 2017, and returned as an associate lawyer following her Call to the Bar in 2018. Laura is a member of the Waterloo Region Law Association.
Laura volunteers each week as a reading buddy at the Kitchener Public Library. When not in the office, Laura enjoys reading, writing, spending time with her dog, Harper, and becoming the next William's sister on the tennis court. She is a sports enthusiast and a former figure skater who still enjoys jumping on the ice from time to time.
